Starts naïve and nerdy, grows in confidence to become a true rock ‘n roll star. Plays GUITAR and sings extremely well. Able to comfortably solo on electric guitar. [JERRY ALLISON + BELMONT] white, early 20s, male. Good looking drummer from Lubbock, Texas with cheeky humor. Play drums at advanced level - please specify additional instrumental abilities. [JOE B. MAUDLIN + BELMONT] white, early 20s, male. Serious character with musical ability from Lubbock, Texas. Plays upright Bass at advanced level - please specify additional instrumental abilities. She plays Classical violin. Because of her boyfriend, Beckett’s, influence and enthusiasm, she has recently begun to play Old Time American fiddle music again, as she did as a young girl in North Carolina. BECKETT- THIS ROLE IS CAST. white, 26, male. A kind and quirky young man from New England who has the simultaneous air of being ahead of his time as well as being from a time before his own. His excitement for American Folk Music and his academic research have brought them to Windy Hill, North Carolina. He is proficient on mandolin and guitar and plays this style of music very well. EDGAR- THIS ROLE IS CAST. white, 75, male. A taciturn and circumspect widower who has lived the last eighteen years alone near Windy Hill. He is a Vietnam veteran, an electrician by trade and Mira’s grandfather. He has been, for all his life, a player of Traditional, Old Time and Bluegrass music, and when he gets going, the sparkling performer and storyteller shines through. He plays banjo, guitar, dulcimer and harmonica. LET THERE BE LOVE [ALFRED] 60s. West Indian. Quintessential grumpy old man. [MARIA] mid-late 20s. A young woman from Poland, bright, sprightly, and confident. [GEMMA] 30s. Alfred’s daughter. Struggles to know where she fits in. GULFSHORE PLAYHOUSE: NEW WORKS FESTIVAL [PERFORMERS] 18+, all ethnicities and gender identities to play a variety of roles in these readings of new plays. 26 MILES [OLIVIA] Female, 18+ to play 15, white-passing Latina. Quirky, intelligent, independent but lonely. Olivia was primarily raised by her father after she chose him during her parents divorce. She tries to understand the world through writing, but has become unmoored by the trials and tribulations of adolescence. [BEATRIZ] Female, 40s, non-white Latina (Cuban). A firecracker, protective but often overbearing. Doubles as Janet. [AARON] Male, 40s, White. Olivia’s dad and Beatriz’s ex-husband. Aaron is a loving father but has grown distant and apathetic since marrying his new wife. Doubles as Joe, attendant, and Reader 2. [MANUEL] Male, 40s, Latino. Manuel is Beatriz’s intellectually curious boyfriend who has trouble taking responsibility for himself. Doubles as Tamál seller, Uemura, and Reader 1. WINTER WONDERETTES [MISSY] female, late 20s-early 30s, any ethnicity/race. Always the over-achiever of the group, Missy has now blossomed into a full-fledged adult over-achiever. She is an elementary school teacher with cat-eye glasses. She is an elementary school teacher and has recently returned from her honeymoon with her new husband Bill. She has an inner-sexiness that comes out every once-in-a-while, much to her surprise and embarrassment. (Soprano with belt. Range: F#3–A5) [CINDY LOU] female, late 20s-early 30s, any ethnicity/race. Cindy Lou is the "bad girl" of the group, now reformed (to a point). She is sexy with a dry and sassy wit, and has a miles-high jet-black beehive, a cross between the Ronettes and early Priscilla Presley. She has a soft side and inner depth, revealed in an Act II monologue and ballad. (Mezzo Soprano with belt — sings lead vocal line on most group songs. Range: A3–E5) [SUZY] female, late 20s-early 30s, any ethnicity/race. Happy-go-lucky, a little giddy, a little silly, and a little pregnant. She’s always willing to go along with anyone and anything, and she seems to giggle at just about anything. She married Ritchie, her high-school sweetheart. (Mezzo/Alto with big belt. Range: C#3–E5) [BETTY JEAN] female, late 20s-early 30s, any ethnicity/race. The self-anointed clown of the group, always vying for attention from her best friend Cindy Lou. She loves that she is finally in charge of the group, if only for this one performance. She has worked at Harper’s Hardware since High School and is proud to have made it into corporate sales. She is struggling with her marriage and has an inner strength that belies her goofiness. (Strong Alto with big belt. Highly intelligent and cultured, upper-class socialite. Generally well- intentioned yet slightly aloof. Adroit skill to keep up appearance in spite of deep troubles. [WYNN] male, 18+ to play 17, white. Sarcastic teenaged son, coping with trauma from recent a leg injury. Possesses untapped leadership ability.
