Seeking:Berry Gordy (Lead): Male, 18-50, African American, attractive, appealing, and aspirational; a commanding presence; slim build; must have a huge pop tenor voice with soaring tenor notes (preferred strong chest voice to D5, with strong falsetto mix); lead role. Diana Ross (Lead): Female, African American, to play 16 to 40; 5'1" to 5'5"; stunningly beautiful with a very petite/slim build; must be able to portray Diana's youthful, shy innocence and then grow to become a super star; strong pop belt to E5 with wonderful melodic sensibilities; lead role. Smokey Robinson (Lead): Male, African American, 20s to early 30s; tenor; must look and sound, like Smokey Robinson, and must be an authentic and sincere actor; funny with a heart of gold; chest voice to Bb4, falsetto mix to Eb5; lead role. Seeking:Claude Frollo (Lead): Male, 38-50, archdeacon of Notre Dame Cathedral and the most powerful cleric in Paris, he is the reluctant caretaker of Quasimodo; he will do whatever it takes to rid the city of the gypsy “vermin,” even as he lusts after Esmeralda; calculating, manipulative, and obsessive; vocal range: E2-Bb4. Quasimodo (Lead): Male, 20-30, the deformed bell-ringer of Notre Dame and Claude Frollo’s charge; lonely and staunchly obedient to Frollo, he possesses a vivid imagination that brings to life the bells and gargoyles of the cathedral; despite his shyness and uncertainty, he quickly befriends Esmeralda. Big-hearted, and brave when need be; vocal range: Bb2-C5; must have at least a strong Bb but C preferred. Esmerelda (Lead): Female, 18-33, a beautiful and free-spirited gypsy who possesses the strong sense of justice and morality that Frollo lacks; compassionate, she frees Quasimodo from the frenzied mob at the Feast of Fools and, against her better judgment, falls for the cocky Phoebus; vocal range: E3-D5. Captain Phoebus de Martin (Lead): Male, 23-35, returning to Paris after serving in the war, Phoebus takes up his new position as Captain of the Cathedral Guard; overconfident yet charming, this handsome, strong soldier makes the ladies swoon, yet his moral compass is also strong, and he openly defies the corrupted Frollo; vocal range: A2-Ab4. Clopin Trouillefou (Supporting): Male, 25-40, the clever and charismatic King of the Gypsies; an air of mystery surrounds Clopin, who often leaves the scene in a puff of smoke; as the master of ceremonies for the Feast of Fools, he is witty and playful, but he boasts a darker, serious nature when not performing for the crowd; vocal range: D3- F#5. Florika (Supporting): Female, 18-30, a gypsy and Quasimodo’s mother; vocal range: E4-F#5. Jehan Frollo (Supporting): Male, 20-30, Claude’s reckless younger brother; with the gypsy Florika, he fathers Quasimodo, who he leaves in his brother’s care; wild, passionate, and strong-willed; vocal range top: F3-Eb5. Father Dupin (Chorus / Ensemble): Male, 40-60, a priest of Notre Dame and Claude and Jehan’s guardian; vocal range: C3-A3. Tribunal (Chorus / Ensemble): Male, 20-50, a judicial officer; vocal range top: G2-E4. Saint Aphrodisius (Chorus / Ensemble): Male, 30-50, a stained-glass image that comes to life; vocal range: B3-E4. Seeking:Ensemble Men: Male, 30-59, seven versatile men to play Sonny’s wise-guys as well as various inhabitants of Calogero’s neighborhood; looking for unique, authentic characters with strong voices and comedic chops; at least one must be a true bass-baritone , one must be quite heavy-set, and one should be a Sinatra/Bennett/Martin/Darin “song stylist”; must move well. Doo-Wop Group (Chorus / Ensemble): Male, 20-39, four guys; Calogero’s best friends; also double as various inhabitants of Calogero’s neighborhood; excellent dancers and singers (at least one must be a true bass-baritone; at least one must have a thrilling doo-wop falsetto; one must be a top-quality lead vocalist; and all four must be capable of performing tricky close-harmony arrangements). Two Ensemble Men: Male, 20-39, African American, excellent singers; tenors (high C); strong movers; will also play featured ensemble parts ”Tyrone”, Jane’s brother, and his friend “Jesse”, age 17. Ensemble Women (Chorus / Ensemble): Female, 20-39, three Italian girls in Calogero’s neighborhood; beautiful, funny, tough; excellent dancers and singers. Two Ensemble Women (Chorus / Ensemble): Female, 20-39, African American, excellent singers/dancers; may understudy “Jane”; will also play featured ensemble parts “Denise” & “Frieda” Jane’s friends, age 17. Sonny: 30-49, Italian; the number one man in the neighborhood; he’s the leader of the wise guys; powerful and charismatic. Strong singer; full voice to G above middle C a plus, should be “at home” with stylings of Frank Sinatra / Tony Bennett / Dean Martin / Bobby Darin; principal. Lorenzo: Male, 30-49, Italian; Calogero’s father; strong and sympathetic; he works as a bus driver; excellent tenor or high baritone; ability to express honest emotion while singing more important than vocal fireworks; principal. Young Calogero: Male, 9-18, child; must believably play nine yrs. old; Calogero’s younger self; excellent singer who moves very well; principal. Rosina: Female, 30-49, Italian; Calogero’s mother; sensible and beautiful; strong singer, warm mezzo or alto voice preferred; principal. Jane: Female, 18+ to play 17; African-American; Calogero falls in love with her; striking and smart; excellent singer who moves well; should be completely “at home” as the lead singer of a girl group; principal.
