Seeking:Jean Valjean: Male, 35-40, a poor peasant who rises to affluence, he has great natural nobility and dignity. A powerful figure, ideally a large man with a character of operatic size and passion. The voice needs to have a pop/rock sound or a classical sound of extraordinary textual clarity; sings to B (high lyric baritone or tenor with strong low notes). Javert: Male, 18+, policeman who relentlessly hunts Valjean. Ideally a large man. The ultimate “law and order” figure. Obsessed, to the point of irrationality, with a rigid and merciless moral code. He too is a character of operatic size and passion. Both belt voice and classical can suit this role but must have a darker quality than Jean Valjean; baritone, sings to G. Thenardier: Male, 30-45, strong comic character role. A crooked innkeeper, later a petty, amoral thief. Greedy, irreverent, selfish, boorish, vulgar; baritone, sings to F#. Marius: 18-29, a member of the revolutionary student movement. Attractive and romantic but in a sensitive, 19th century “byronic” way; high baritone (sings to A) with a strong bottom (to A). Enjolras: Male, 20-36, charismatic political figure; leader of the revolutionary movement; high baritone (to G#/A); very strong singer. Fantine: Female, 20-39, poor factory girl, struggling to support her fatherless daughter. Later is a pauper, a prostitute, a consumptive and a ghost. Earthy and poignant. Although is finally defeated by circumstances she should appear to be strong and a survivor. She puts up a valiant fight against the horrors of her life; belt up to C, sings to Eb. Cosette: Female, 18-25, the younger the better; Fantine’s daughter (first seen as and played by a child) delicate, elegant, vulnerable and beautiful. Falls in love with and later marries Marius; soprano (to high C) but a light, young “floating” sound, without heavy vibrato. Eponine: Female, 18+, daughter of the Thenardiers but in no way behaves like them. Fired by an unrequited love for Marius. Small, gamine, waif-like. Hasn’t learned to disguise her emotions; wears her heart on her sleeve; an enormous and beautiful belt voice, to C in belt (sings to Eb). Madame Thenardier: Female, 30-46, tough, sharp, coarse, boorish, vulgar; strong character comedienne role; belter. Gavroche: Male, 7-11, 52” tall or less. Spunky street urchin. Lots of personality. Sings very well. Young Cosette and Young Eponine: Female, 7-11, 50” tall or less. Sweet innocent waifs. Pretty soprano voice.

Seeking:Annie Scott (Lead): Female, 20-29, a smart, lively and ambitious young person; quick wit and sharp tongue, with little tolerance for fools or foolishness; willful and determined; once you get her attention, she can surprise you with her sensitivity. Thomas Scott (Lead): Male, 55-65, a charming presence, likable and enthusiastic; when he is in good spirits, he takes pleasure in singing hymns, which he does with cheerful vigor and a good strong voice; when he is not, he doesn’t sing a note and can be somewhat forbidding (at least to his children); Scott is a simple, sturdy man, who puts his duty first, always trying his best to do what’s right, even if his view of that is quite narrow. Ellen Scott: Female, 50-60, a gentle, quiet woman who prefers her husband and children to occupy the foreground; Ellen is more practical than her husband is, so she worries more; she loves her husband and is protective of him, and perhaps a little naïve about his faults. Wicksteed: Male, 50-60, a modern, prosperous businessman with the easy charm of a good salesman; he is at ease with himself and with others. May Rufford: Female, 18-25, late teens or early 20's; a sweet, conventional girl; but she’s just bold enough to be drawn to Annie and to adore her. Lucy Griffin: Female, 18-25, late teens or early 20’s; a bit spoiled and rather full of herself; Lucy may be smarter than she appears.
