Seeking:Jean Valjean: Male, 35-40s. Sings to B (high lyric baritone or tenor with strong low notes). A poor peasant who rises to affluence, he has great natural nobility and dignity. A powerful figure, ideally a large man with a character of operatic size and passion. The voice needs to have a pop/rock sound or a classical sound of extraordinary textual clarity. Javert: Male, 35-49, Baritone, sings to G. Policeman who relentlessly hunts Valjean. Ideally a large man. The ultimate “law and order” figure. Obsessed, to the point of irrationality, with a rigid and merciless moral code. He too is a character of operatic size and passion. Both belt voice and classical can suit this role but must have a darker quality than Jean Valjean. Thenardier: Male, Late 30s-40s. Strong comic character role. A crooked innkeeper, later a petty, amoral thief. Greedy, irreverent, selfish, boorish, vulgar. Baritone, sings to F sharp. Marius: Male, 20s. High baritone (sings to A) with a strong bottom (to A). A member of the revolutionary student movement. Attractive and romantic but in a sensitive, 19th century “byronic” way. Enjolras: 20s-early 30s. High baritone (to G sharp/A) very strong singer. Charismatic political figure. Leader of the revolutionary movement. Fantine: Female, Late 20s, early 30s. Belt up to C, sings to E flat. Poor factory girl, struggling to support her fatherless daughter. Later is a pauper, a prostitute, a consumptive and a ghost. Earthy and poignant. Although is finally defeated by circumstances she should appear to be strong and a survivor. She puts up a valiant fight against the horrors of her life. Cosette: Female, 18-25 (the younger the better). Fantine’s daughter (first seen as and played by a child) delicate, elegant, vulnerable and beautiful. Falls in love with and later marries Marius. Soprano (to high C) but a light, young “floating” sound, without heavy vibrato. Eponine: Female, 18-25, An enormous and beautiful belt voice, to C in belt (sings to E flat). Daughter of the Thenardiers but in no way behaves like them. Fired by an unrequited love for Marius. Small, gamine, waif-like. Hasn’t learned to disguise her emotions; wears her heart on her sleeve. Madame Thenardier: Female, 30s-early 40s. Tough, sharp, coarse, boorish, vulgar. Strong character comedienne role. Belter. Gavroche: Boy, age 7-11. 52” tall or less. Spunky street urchin. Lots of personality. Sings very well. Young Cosette & Young Eponine: Girls, age 7-11. 50” tall or less. Sweet innocent waifs. Pretty soprano voice. Ensemble: Males & Females, 18+, Female artists to form an ensemble of eight ladies; all ladies belt up to C & most will cover principals; the show is entirely sung and everyone in it must be a strong singer with a wide range; with only one or two exceptions, women must be strong belters. Male artists to form an ensemble of eleven men; all men sing to G and most will cover principals; the show is entirely sung and everyone in it must be a strong singer with a wide range; the men are primarily rangy high baritone, or tenors with strong low ranges.

Seeking:Jenna: Female, 20s-30s, any ethnicity. A woman stuck in her life as an unhappily married waitress in a small town; finds some happiness and expression through her meticulous baking of pies and her friendships with her coworkers, Dawn and Becky; lives her live paycheck-to-paycheck, day by day, and wants nothing more than to get away and start fresh, unbeknownst to her destructive husband, Earl. Must have a fantastic pop/rock voice with great range. Principal. Dawn: Female, 20s, any ethnicity. She is the youngest of the waitresses; thick glasses, hair parted 14 centimeters to the left—eccentric is the nice way to say she’s slightly unusual, and not so slightly OCD; she sets the tables, painstakingly insuring each salt and pepper-shaker is equidistant from the napkin holder. Must have an excellent pop/rock/folk voice. Principal. Becky: Female, early 40s-early 50s, any ethnicity. The oldest of the three waitresses; irreverent, irascible, been there, made it back, and somehow kept her forward and sometimes wicked sense of humor with excellent comedic timing. Must have a soulful pop voice with an excellent pop belt. Principal. Dr. Pomatter: Male, 30s-early 40s, any ethnicity. Handsome, endearing, and neurotic; has a warm, if clumsy, matter; Jenna’s gynecologist with whom an unexpected extramarital affair is born; has a quirky sense of humor and a big heart, despite the fact that he’s contributing to the affair; must have impeccable comedic timing and must move well. Should have a very strong pop/rock tenor that can navigate the musical style of Sara Bareilles with ease. Principal. Earl: Male, 20s-30s, Caucasian. Jenna’s husband; peaked in high school, handsome in a gruff way, but that face is clouded with broken dreams, drowned with cheap beer; just enough narcissism mixed with stupidity to be a potent Molotov cocktail that can explode into unexpected anger one second and then turn into a sobbing mess the next. Actors auditioning for Earl would need to come prepared with a song in the vein of Elton John or a similar contemporary singer/songwriter. Guitar playing a plus. Principal. Ogie: Male, 30s, any ethnicity. Strange, yet oddly lovable; becomes slightly obsessed with Dawn (in a hilarious yet endearing way) after she goes on a five-minute date with him; quirky, incredibly persistent, and odd, yet kind. Should have excellent comedic timing. Must have an excellent pop/rock tenor/baritenor sound. Principal. Joe: Male, 60s-70s, any ethnicity. The owner of the diner where Jenna, Dawn, Becky, and Cal work; a seemingly old, curmudgeonly man who has a soft spot for Jenna (and her pie), but picks when that warmth allows itself to be shown; a sarcastically funny and no-nonsense guy with a keen ability to read people. Very funny. Principal. Cal, u/s Joe: Male, any ethnicity, 40s. Cal: A chef at the diner; a “salt of the earth” guy’s guy surrounded by gals; brash, impatient, unsentimental, but somehow charming; should have a strong pop/rock voice with great comedic chops; must have a strong contemporary baritone singing voice in the style of Sara Bareilles and have excellent comedic timing. Will also understudy the role of Joe: male, 60s-70s, any ethnicity.
