Minnie, 21, lives abroad with her physically and emotionally abusive husband, Frank. She's never really experienced a harsh frontier life but sympathizes with her family's hardships and misses them terribly. Frank, 32, could pass for white and often has. Domineering, abusive, elitist, feels like he's owed something because he's better than blacks. Very bitter. Wil, 40, a man of principle, trustworthy, uncomplicated, spirited, wants the companionship of a smart, secure woman. If he's lucky, that woman would be Fannie. Should play harmonica, banjo or 'sticks.' _______________ A FLEA IN HER EAR All roles have been CAST  _______________ THE UNDERSTUDY We strongly encourage actors of all cultural backgrounds. Seeking: Harry (male – late 30s, early 40s): A gifted actor with average looks but exceptional talent, he has fallen far short of the career he hoped for. His bitterness about other actors’ successes and the sizable chip on his shoulder are two of his most prominent characteristics. But he is also extremely charming when he wants to be, intelligent, passionate about the theatre, and has the soul of an artist. He also has a fear of commitment, having left Roxanne at the altar years earlier. Jake (male – 30s): A B-list Hollywood action star longing for artistic respect. He has genuine talent, taste, charm, and intelligence, but will always be underestimated because of his drop-dead handsome, leading man looks. He is unashamed of his career choices thus far, but is growing tired of not being taken seriously as an actor. Roxanne (female – late 30s, early 40s): The stage manager for this rehearsal, and a former actress, she prides herself on being put together and running a tight ship, but finds herself frustratingly rattled by the unexpected reappearance of Harry, her former fiance?e, after six years of silence. She does her best to keep control of a rehearsal that seems increasingly derailed by the inscrutable whims of the universe, but eventually she starts to crack under pressure, which is a source of much of the play’s comic energy. _________________ THOUSAND PINES We strongly encourage actors of all cultural backgrounds. Note: This play follows three separate families over the course of one Thanksgiving dinner in the present day. The three families are played by the same actors, the roles doubled as outlined below. Actor 1 (female, 45-55) plays Paula Foster, Sophie Paulson-Kane, and Rita Garrison Actor 2 (male, 45-55) plays Martin Foster, Oliver Paulson, and Frank Atkins Actor 3 (female, 35-40) plays Beth Sanders, Debbie Carter, and Evelyn Smoot Actor 4 (male, 35-40) plays Charlie Sanders, Warren Kane, and Kyle Garrison Actor 5 (female, 20-25) plays Ashley Lawson, Gretchen Paulson, and Tori Metro Actor 6 (male, 20) plays Justin Foster THE FOSTERS – Paula Foster’s younger son, Cory, injured nine and killed three (including himself) in a shooting at his school, Thousand Pines Junior High. The shooting occurred six months before the events of the play. Note: The audience does not learn that Cory was the shooter until the final act of the play. Paula Foster (played by Actor 1): A put-together woman with a put-on smile. Insistently clinging to a fac?ade of pleasant normalcy as the only way to hold herself together. Justin Foster (played by Actor 6): Paula’s older son. A sober-minded college student. Feels isolated in his grief and by what he perceives as Paula’s refusal to confront the reality of their loss. Martin Foster (played by Actor 2): The brother of Paula’s deceased husband. Easygoing, a peacekeeper. Beth Sanders (played by Actor 3): Paula’s sister. Amiable and considerate. Two months pregnant, but hesitant about sharing the news with Paula. Charlie Sanders (played by Actor 4): Beth’s husband. Kindhearted and unassuming. Ashley Lawson (played by Actor 5): Justin’s ex-fiance?e. Pretty, precocious but deeply caring. A Dean’s List psychology major. THE KANES – Warren Kane’s son Grayson (Sophie’s stepson) was killed in the shooting. Sophie Paulson-Kane (played by Actor 1): A matriarch with sharp nails and dyed hair. A bit of a steamroller, ferociously pursuing a lawsuit against the school district in the absence of any other closure in her stepson’s murder. Oliver Paulson (played by Actor 2): Sophie’s ex-husband. A lawyer, representing Sophie in the lawsuit. A mild workaholic. Businesslike but sincere. Warren Kane (played by Actor 4): Sophie’s new husband. Tense and angrier than he lets on. Resents the intrusion of Oliver and the lawsuit into their lives. Gretchen Paulson (played by Actor 5): Oliver and Sophie’s daughter. Confident and spirited, with some of her mother’s fierceness. Protective of those she cares about. Debbie Carter (played by Actor 3): A teacher and the primary witness in the lawsuit against the school district. Mousy and agreeable. Searching for a way to ease the guilt and isolation she feels in the shooting’s aftermath. THE GARRISONS – Rita Garrison’s son Tyler was killed in the shooting. Rita Garrison (played by Actor 1): A single mom. Rough around the edges but has always done her best for her family. Torn between lingering in memories and facing her fear of moving forward in her new reality. Kyle Garrison (played by Actor 4): Rita’s younger brother. Sullen and angry. Isolated in his anger and unsure of how to be there for Rita given the troubled history between them. Frank Atkins (played by Actor 2): A police officer. Used to be romantically involved with Rita. Concerned for Rita but wary of falling back into a relationship that has run its course. Evelyn Smoot (played by Actor 3): Rita’s neighbor and a Thousand Pines mom. Bit of an interfering busybody. Tori Metro (played by Actor 5): A reserved and thoughtful young woman. Her overtures to Rita are borne out of genuine concern.

Seeking:Piper: Female, late teens to 20s. The youngest of four sisters/princesses; brainy, but somewhat awkward socially and naive about the world. An ardent student of math, physics, and astronomy. A girl with big ideas and strong moral convictions, but fears she is “falling behind.” In an effort to win the Prince’s heart, she is transformed by magical methods into Bliss, a vacuous robotic superficial caricature storybook princess who has a flawless exterior but with all of Piper’s previous knowledge and personality drained out of her. Actress must be able to move effortlessly between the two personas. As Piper: high mix and contemporary sound (low G to high Gb), As Bliss: legit, effervescent soprano head voice to high C). Should be able to dance. Carmella: Female, late teens to 20s. The second sister. Plus-sized in body and spirit; girly, ebullient, uninhibited, open-hearted, and dramatic. Loves music and the limelight. The most infatuated with Prince Devin. Should have a diva flair in her voice, but in a funny way (low F# to high F#). Should be able to dance or be a strong mover. Holly: Female, late teens to 20s. The third sister. Brash and blunt with a butch/masculine swagger. Simultaneously good-natured and no-nonsense. A resourceful jack of all trades with her own strange logic. Relates more to the animal world than the human one. Alto (low F# to high Eb). Should be able to dance or be strong mover. Faye: Female, late teens to 20s. The oldest sister. Dry and cynical. The years of isolation have rendered her with an air of negativity. Beneath her hard outer shell, however, is a love for her sisters that she gets in touch with throughout the show. Can slay with with a dirty look or a sarcastic jab. A natural fighter, who’s good with her trusty sword. Powerhouse pop/rock vocalist with an edge to her voice (low F# to high Eb). Should be able to dance or be a strong mover. Prince Devin: Male, 20s. The prince of the Kingdom of Mirrors. Extremely good-looking teen idol/pop heartthrob. Narcissistic and egocentric. Pretty, but dumb as a post. Takes himself very seriously. Vain, superficial, and secretly not the heroic warrior he is touted to be. Pop tenor (low Eb to high Bb: head voice to C). Should be able to dance. Toby: Male, 18 to early 20s. A young shoemaker. An artistic soul who spends his time in his artsy shop making eclectic elaborate shoes. Attractive, but in an offbeat quirky way. Sweet-natured and sensitive, but not a wimp. A young character actor with charm and a bright personality. Warm, animated, and funny. Secretly in love with Princess Piper. Tenor (low Db to high A: head voice to D). Should be able to dance or be a strong mover. Sir Pincus Glimmermore: Male, 35-60s. A magical Fairy Godfather specializing in arranging “happily ever afters.” Values physical perfection above all else. A colorful showman with great style, a big personality, and a deliciously evil streak. Equal parts manipulative, brilliant, sharp-tongued, and fabulous. Must be a strong comic actor. Tenor (low F to high A; head voice to D). Princess Taffeta: Female, 40s-60. The head of Heatherfileds, a finishing school for transforming "ordinary girls” into "perfect princesses” so they can find their happily ever afters. A perfectly preserved storybook princess with the innocence of a child. Has stayed physically perfect by magical means for decades, but will turn back into herself, a brassy middle-aged woman with a lifetime of pent-up feelings. Pretty bright soprano (low Bb to high F). As her transformed persona: a big rock belt. The King: Male, late 40s-60. The girls’ father, The King of Minisculia. After the untimely death of his wife, he cloistered away his four young daughters to protect them from the cruelty of the world and provide them with an extensive education. Although deeply loving and devoted, the tight grip and watchful eye he has employed to keep them safe, has kept the girls from experiencing the world outside the castle and maturing into the grown women they were destined to be. Although an authority figure in the girls lives, he is not a villain; in reality, he's just the opposite--a tragically comic figure masking his own shameful secrets and personal insecurities. Strong baritone (low A to high E; head voice to F#).
